Dyslexia
What is Dyslexia?
Dyslexia is defined by the International Dyslexia Association as a language-based learning disability. Dyslexia refers to a cluster of symptoms, which result in people having difficulties with specific language skills, particularly reading. Students with dyslexia usually experience challenges with other language skills such as spelling, writing, and pronouncing words.
It is referred to as a learning disability because it can make it very difficult for a person to succeed academically in the typical instructional environment and often requires specialized intervention. It is important for these individuals to be taught by qualified professionals using a systematic and explicit method that is multisensory. Many individuals need one-on-one help so that they can move forward at their own pace.
As a Wilson Certified Reading and Dyslexia Practitioner, and language-literacy specialist, a customized program is created for your child to improve reading, writing and language skills.
Early identification and treatment are the key to succeeding academically, socially and in everyday life experiences.
Signs of dyslexia include:
- Learning: Difficulty learning new letters, and sounds, words, or learning to read
- Reading: Reading slowly, making errors when reading aloud, or reading below grade level
- Writing: Poor handwriting, writing slowly, or writing words backwards
- Spelling: Inconsistent spelling, or difficulty spelling simple words
